Looking for gardening apps that help users improve productivity throughout the growing process? Well, here are eight that I use to help me do everything from companion planting to relaxing in the yard.

8 Gardening Apps for Beginners and Experts

1. iNaturalist

Created by the California Academy of Sciences and National Geographic, iNaturalist is a social media platform and plant identification app. What makes it different from many other such apps is that it also identifies bugs, birds and other garden species.

If iNaturalist can’t identify the plant immediately, the app automatically tags the image. Then, others within the app’s community can swoop in and help identify it for you. There’s even a searchable map that informs you of all the species that have been seen in your local area recently.

2. LeafSnap

Currently having the ability to recognize 90% of all known trees and plants, LeafSnap identifies them using artificial intelligence. Simply upload a picture from your device or capture one through the app itself, and the app will give you the following information about the plant:

3. Planta

If you’re new to gardening, Planta is an outstanding app to help you launch your new plant journey. It provides users with plant recommendations based on the location information you input. You’ll receive reminder notifications for each individual crop in your garden, so you never forget when to:

Planta also comes with a built-in light meter. This allows you to determine what kind of light various areas of your yard and house provide for your plants.

4. Planter — Garden Planner

This is my all-time favorite gardening app. I use Planter Garden Planner almost every day for one reason or another. It helps you plan out your entire garden, one bed at a time. After choosing the square-foot dimensions of a bed, simply add plants to it from the app’s database.

For each plant, it gives you information such as:

  • Description
  • Varieties
  • Category
  • Spacing
  • Planting Depth
  • Sun Exposure
  • Watering
  • Best Season(s)
  • Frost Hardiness
  • Maturity Time
  • Growing Calendar
  • How to Start Seeds
  • Companion Plants
  • Combative Plants
  • Pests
  • Diseases
  • Harvesting
  • And More…

5. Planticus

Using artificial intelligence, Planticus helps you identify diseases and pests on your plants and throughout your landscape. This helps improve your crops’ health for a more sustainable garden.

How to Use Planticus

  1. Upload Plant Image — Use your smartphone’s camera to snap a picture of the plant and upload it to the app to find out if it’s healthy or what disease(s) it may have
  2. Upload Bug Image — Upload an image of a pest you’re worried about and Planticus will tell you the name of the pest and whether it’s a garden friend or foe
  3. Find a Cure — The app will search its database to give you tips on how to cure the issue or if it’s incurable

6. Smart Plant Home

This all-in-one gardening app is most popular because of its Smart Plant Home Care Calendar. Once a plant is added to the app, it automatically sets up a calendar with reminders for watering, fertilizing and other needed tasks to keep the plant healthy.

Smart Plant Home is an amazing app for gardening newbies or people with black thumbs. Use it to troubleshoot pests and diseases thanks to its searchable problem solver feature. If it can’t identify the problem, just upload the images and horticulturist specialists across the globe using the app can chime in and help.

7. Sun Seeker — Tracker & Compass

The comprehensive app literally tracks the sun. This helps you determine the best place to plant each individual crop within your garden or landscape based on the type and amount of light it needs to thrive.

Sun Seeker Tracker and Compass is the only app on this list that’s not free. It costs $9.99 but may be well worth it, especially for those who are new to gardening.

8. Terrarium Garden Idle

Although this app does not improve productivity, I still believe Terrarium Garden Idle belongs on this list because it’s a really cool, fun gardening game to play. To play this crop game:

All of this helps increase your oxygen income. Then, you can use those “funds” to purchase more plants within the app.

Gardening Apps That Work

There are many other gardening apps for the web and mobile devices that also get the job done. When choosing apps to help you garden better, be sure to check out the reviews.

You want to be sure not to clog your device up with useless apps that don’t do what they say. And if there are any that you use for gardening that you’d like us to include on our list, be sure to tell us in the comments below.

Happy Gardening!
